Going Alone or Getting Professional Coaching?

Going Alone or Getting Professional Coaching?
May 4, 2023 by Jeff Watt

Career paths can be unpredictable. Many people find themselves on a path that they didn’t necessarily plan for, while others have a clear idea of where they want to go. But what separates those who are simply coasting by from those who are thriving in their careers? The answer may lie in the support of a career coach.

Consider two hypothetical individuals: Sarah and John. Both have been working in the same industry for the same amount of time, and both have a strong track record of good performance. However, Sarah has been working with a career coach to help her navigate her career path, while John has not sought out any additional guidance.

As a result, Sarah’s career has taken a slightly different trajectory than John’s. While John has been promoted several times based solely on his good work, Sarah has also been able to identify opportunities for growth and development in her field through her work with a career coach. With her coach’s help, she’s been able to identify her strengths and weaknesses, explore different career paths, and develop the skills she needs to move forward.

Now, years later, Sarah is in a senior leadership role at her company. John is still doing well, but he hasn’t had the same level of support and guidance that Sarah has had, which has limited his ability to take his career to the next level.

This is not to say that John’s approach is wrong – good performance is certainly important in any career path. But it’s important to remember that in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing work environment, even the best performers can benefit from the guidance of a career coach.

Working with a career coach can help individuals identify their strengths and weaknesses, explore new career paths, develop new skills, and ultimately achieve their professional goals. And for businesses, offering career coaching to employees can help to increase engagement, job satisfaction, and retention.

So, whether you’re just starting out in your career or you’re a seasoned professional looking to make a change, consider the benefits of working with a career coach. It could be the difference between simply getting by and truly thriving in your chosen profession.
